The Rila monastery lies in the very Rila mountain, at 1,147 meters above sea level. It is situated
117km away from Sofia to the south, and is no doubt the most popular tourist site among all monasteries in Bulgaria equally
for its size, natural surroundings, architecture, wall paintings and ancient history. The monastery is flanked by the small
mountain rivers of Rilska and Drushlyavitsa and is only 4 hours walking distance from the Malyovitsa peak, rising at 2,729
meters above sea level. The highest peak of the Rila mountain, Mousala (2925 meters), which is also the Balkan peninsula’s
highest point, is further away at about 8 hours’ walk. The monastery offers a great view to the surrounding peaks of
the mountain and represents a developed tourist sight with all the accompanying facilities such as souvenir shops, restaurants
and inns.

Kotel – Jeravna - Sliven |
|
Jeravna is a little Bulgarian village
with ancient Bulgarian Renaissance architecture, situated in the central part of the Eastern Balkan mountains, near the town
of Kotel, in Bulgaria. The village of Jeravna has 330 houses and 550 habitants. It is situated at 640 m. above sea level. The
most elevated point is Rasboina peak which is at 1128 m. above sea level. The minimum temperatures are registered in January
(-19°C) and maximum temperatures are in July (38°C).
Jeravna is a world wide known architectural reserve. The
village keeps more than 200 wooden houses. Some of them are over 300 years old.Every year Jeravna meets more than 130 000
tourists. More than the half of them are foreigners .
The land around Jeravna has been inhabitted by the Thracians.
There are no clear evidences for the time they desapear, but there are facts that proves they were here...
The Vida fortress has been constructed around 4th century.
It was an important power point at the mountain pass called "Demir kapu" that means "Iron Gates". The legend tells there were
stone walls and iron gates, keeping the pass to the Northern parts of the country. Today there are stiil some remains from
the fortress, the walls and a 2 kilometers long entrenchment.
The ethnographical museum of Jeravna keeps an interesting
coin collection that tells many facts about the history of the area. All the coins (Roman and Attic) have been discovered
in the village or near the village. This fact tells that Jeravna has been inhabitted by the Romans and the Byzantines. The
mountain ridge above the village was the place where passed the border between ancient Bulgaria and the Roman empire. Later
it becomes the border between Bulgaria and Byzantium.

Varna and Aladja Bulgarian Riviera, Full day |
|
Balchik is a town of steep cobbled lanes flanked by quaint whitewashed and terracotta-tile-roofed cottages set below
white chalk cliffs. An early Roman town closer to the shoreline was wiped out by a tidal wave , probably caused by an earthquake
on an Aegean or Turkish fault line , so 'new' Balchik was rebuilt at a higher elevation in the 7th century AD. In 1913 the
region around the town was annexed by Romania. It returned to Bulgarian sovereignty in 1940 but this short period of Romanian
rule left the town the legacy of its greatest attraction - the Summer Palace of Queen Marie.
The English born Queen, consort to King Ferdinand of Romania,
wanted a retreat from court life and this palace, built in early 1920s, was perfect.Set in 35hectares the palace is made up
of several separate modest villas set at different height levels and distance from the sea with a stream, a waterfall and
a church all linked by cobbled pathways - rather like a small village. One villa was for the use of the royal couple while
others offered space for guests, courtiers and servants. An Italianate garden was planted along the seafront with seating
areas to enjoy the views. The botanical gardens that grace the palace grounds were developed in the 1950s and now incorporate
over 500 species of plant.
The palace and gardens hosts an annual arts festival in
early July.
